On a recent roadie on the South Island, I fell in love ... twice.
Across five days and 600km, I experienced parts of Aotearoa I had never visited in my 21 years since calling New Zealand home.
The quirky hotbed that is Ōamaru was the first new destination to turn my head, the historic streets practically oozing in creativity. But there was another, even smaller dot on the map, which wooed me with its ‘oldie worlde’ charm. I’m speaking of tiny Clyde, Central Otago’s pocket gem.........

Positive Collaboration on Little Valley Bridge Maintenance
On 23rd September, the Otago Central Rail Trail Business Network (OCRTBN) Chairperson, Andrew Gillies, chaired a constructive meeting between the Central Otago District Council (CODC) and Rail Trail stakeholders to discuss the proposed temporary closure of the Little Valley Bridge, January 2026 - April 2026, for essential maintenance works.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Tamah Alley, Council CEO Peter Kelly, representatives from the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust, and a number of cycle tour operators. It was convened in response to stakeholder concerns regarding communication and consultation around the planned works.
During the discussion, CODC acknowledged the feedback received and committed to working closely with the appointed contractor to minimise disruption to trail users and local tourism operators. An agreed communications pathway has also been established to ensure consistent updates and coordination between CODC, contractors, and Rail Trail stakeholders as the project progresses.
Mr Gillies said the meeting was positive and reflected a shared desire to balance essential infrastructure maintenance with the smooth operation of the region’s key tourism asset.
Community Backs Return of Pukerangi–Middlemarch Rail Link
On 10th July, the OCRTBN hosted a well-attended meeting at the Strath-Taieri Community Centre with Dunedin Railways CEO Rebekah Jenkins. A wide range of local businesses, tourism operators, and community members took part in a constructive discussion about reinstating the Pukerangi–Middlemarch section of the rail line.
Attendees shared strong support for the return of the service, highlighting both the economic and visitor experience benefits, and offering practical ideas for how the local sector could help ensure its success.
Rebekah noted that the meeting had deepened her understanding of the potential and the strong backing for the project. Feedback gathered will help shape Dunedin Railways’ business case for reopening the link.
Thanks to everyone who attended and shared their insights.
